A 72-year-old woman comes to your clinic with a 2-week history of new headaches, jaw pain when chewing, and unexplained fever. She also reports fatigue, weight loss, and muscle pain in her shoulders and hips. On physical examination, her temporal artery is tender and thickened. Laboratory tests reveal an elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and C-reactive protein (CRP). The patient has no history of hypertension, diabetes, or smoking.
